About Silversea Cruises |
Silversea’s watchcry is “Uncompromising Commitment to Service,” and the company has clearly shown that it belongs with the best of the ultra-luxury cruise market. Though not an inexpensive product on paper (no luxury cruise is!), the line’s all-inclusive pricing offers guests value for the money. Gratuities, port charges, and alcoholic beverages (including wine at lunch and dinner) are folded into the cost of the cruise. One complimentary shore excursionknown as the Silversea Experienceis provided on many of its voyages, and it invariably features something other than the run-of-the-mill tour onshore. On one such excursion, the Silversea Experience included a visit to an ancient castle where a produce fair was in progress and at which the mayor of the town greeted passengers in person. Not your basic city coach tour!
The line also offers an option for passengers called “Personalized Voyages.” In essence, the plan allows cruisers to choose their own embarkation/disembarkation ports, regardless of the cruise length and itinerariesmeaning maximum flexibility for passengers.

Life Onboard |
On Silversea, the emphasis is definitely on relaxation; no highly structured schedule of activities exists. Lectures are, of course, offered on virtually all cruises, offering insights into the lives and cultures of the people and countries visited, along with bridge and golf instruction. But the smaller size of the ships, along with the low passenger capacity (only 296388 maximum), mean few major educational opportunities on the ships. Compensations, however, do exist: the passenger-space ratio is among the cruise industry’s highest: 56:8 on the two smaller ships, and 64:4 on the two larger ships. Libraries are well-stocked, and onboard spas are managed by Mandara. Meals are open-seating in the main dining room, with alternative evening dining available in the Terrace Café and the small, upscale Le Champagneboth by reservation only. No organized children’s program is provided, as these ships are inappropriate for most families with young children |

Fellow Passengers |
Passengers tend to be professional (and Fortune 500) types. Generally, as on most small luxury cruise ships, they also are somewhat older than those found on larger mainstream ships. Many are retirees, with the leisure and resources to make Silversea their cruise line of choice, although the larger ships do attract a somewhat younger crowd. But it’s still not a line for the 20- and 30-something set. |
