Travel Guide
Mestre showing street scenes
Historic landmarks, sprawling green parks and traditional Italian culture make this suburb a comfortable, scenic retreat just minutes from the canals of Venice.

Mestre is an enchanting area full of parks, designer stores and a central piazza with historic landmarks. The region is a romantic and scenic retreat for vacationers and travelers. It is also known for its pizza restaurants that prepare traditional family recipes and its patisseries with homemade cakes. The commune provides a welcoming traditional ambiance with cobblestone streets and family-run stores.

Stroll around the scenic Piazza Ferretto. Peruse ancient buildings around the square and relax near the central water fountain which generates a sense of calm. Designer shops dot the surroundings. Eat at one of the piazza’s restaurants with al fresco dining along the pedestrianized area.

Next to the piazza is the Galleria Matteotti, a strip of stores enclosed by a glass roof. Browse jewelers and art shops.

Wander around the historic landmarks of Mestre, perhaps on a free tour of the 17th-century Cathedral of St. Lawrence. Look for the Torre dell’Orologio, a famous watchtower built in 1108 it is the only surviving remnant of a wall that protected the city in medieval times. Admire the Podestarile Palace, a centuries-old building now used as an important government building.

Have a picnic on the grass of San Giuliano Park. Stay for an outdoor concert in the evening. At the nearby Albanese Bissuola Park, you can feed the ducks in the pond.

Take a sip of Aperol, an orange-colored traditional alcoholic drink of tangy sparkling water. If you love coffee, be sure to have an espresso, typically served strong in Italy. Indulge in other Italian favorites, such as pizza and pasta. Although Italian is the main language in Mestre, you may encounter people ordering their meals in the Romance dialect of Venetian.

Due to its affordability, Mestre is often used as a base by travelers visiting the historic center of Venice. Use the easy transportation links between the two regions by train and bus at any time of day. The most practical connection is via the Venezia Mestre Railway Station.

The area around the AO and neighboring new hotels is fine. Mestre could be cleaner and prettier but we did find some good gelaterias. We recommend the pizzas at the new, attractive Montenapoleone restaurant across the street.

I was at the airport sector - mestre itself is fine - it’s where the Venetians have to live now with climate change. Fun shopping & M9 Museum.
