Short Point Recreation Reserve is a picturesque location where you can spend lazy hours gazing over the sea. A grassy area backing Short Point Beach, the reserve is a favorite of locals walking their dogs and picnicking in the sunshine. Bring your binoculars for awe-inspiring views at any time of year. From September to November, you’re likely to spot migrating whales. Notice the intriguing sculpture Tidal Spiral by Ross Cameron. Paddle in the waters of Back Lake behind the beach.
Much of the action takes place on the white sands of the beach at Merimbula, just a few steps from the reserve. Therefore, it’s easy to select between locations to spread out for a day of swimming and sandcastle building. Join the locals surfing or windsurfing when the conditions are right or go fishing along the rocks.
Explore farther afield for new beach scenery. Merimbula Main Beach is the spot for surfers. Bring your snorkel and mask to Pambula Beach then discover the walking tracks that cross over the headland before arriving at a barbecue grill at the picnic area. Barmouth Beach features access to bushwalking tracks through a national park. Bar Beach offers a petite stretch of golden sand with calm, shallow water that’s ideal for splashing with the kids.
From the surf to calm water, Merimbula Lake is another option near Short Point Recreation Reserve. Spencer Park Beach at the end of the lake is another great place for families, with a playground and barbecue grills located beneath shady trees.
Stroll along the walking paths surrounding the lake to watch oyster farmers and fishing boats on the water. When you’re feeling energetic, paddle around the lake on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Stop at Mitchies Jetty for rentals and espresso. You’ll find an array of charming restaurants and coffee shops dotted around the immediate area too.
Short Point Recreation Reserve is located east of Merimbula, with car parking available next to the park. Follow a pathway leading down to the beach or visit other attractions within easy walking distance. It’s also a scenic spot for sunrise and sunset photos.
