Visit Windansea Beach to find the home of one of San Diego’s most iconic surf shacks, a single thatched palapa that dates back to the 1940s. It was initially constructed by soldiers serving in World War II and was reconstructed in 2016.
Observe the expert surfers on the crashing waves of the bay. Watch these experienced surfing enthusiasts from one of the sandstone rocks overlooking the water. Clamber over the various rocks with your little ones. The secluded pockets of sand offer serene spots for a picnic. Sunbathe to make the most of San Diego’s year-round pleasant weather.
Be careful with the strong wave action, as you cool down in the ocean water. Admire the views of Big Rock Reef and its villas and palm trees to the west. Mansions and apartment blocks back onto the rear of the stretch of sand. Take a seat on one of the beach’s many boulders and appreciate the stunning views of the ocean. Stay into the evening and watch the sun descend, turning the sky deep red.
Let your children pick up shells and flowers between the rocks. Dodge the explosive waves together as part of a game.
The site was formerly known as Neptune Beach, before taking on the name of the Hotel Windansea. Note that the name Windansea remained, even after the hotel burned down in the 1940s.
Windansea Beach stretches along the western coast of La Jolla district, in the northwestern outskirts of San Diego. Drive northwest from the city center for 14 miles (23 kilometers) to arrive at the strand in about half an hour. Leave your car in a parking space facing the beach. You can also travel by bus in about an hour from the city center to a stop a few blocks inland.
