The initial building collapsed in 1927 during the Japanese occupation, before being reconstructed seven years later. It was known as the Shengping Stage and adopted its current title in the 1940s. It was reconstructed in 1961 and underwent major renovations in 2011.
Find the Chiufen Shengping Theater right in the heart of Jiufen. From New Taipei City, drive east for about 20 miles (30 kilometers) to get here in less than 1 hour. You can also take a bus to a stop near the police station a little north of the theater. The cinema opens daily from morning until late afternoon.
